Vera Franz has 20 years’ experience at the intersection of digital technology, social justice and philanthropy having designed and directed global technology policy programming for the Open Society Foundations (OSF), the world’s largest private funder of human rights. She also had a leadership role in designing the biggest restructuring of this funder in its 30-year history. Currently, Vera is Division Director for Technology & Society at OSF Global Programs where she leads work to challenge digital threats to open society such as censorship and the manipulation of public discourse as well as the abuse of surveillance powers by governments and corporations. Previously, she was Deputy Director of the Open Society Information Program, where she seed-funded the global Access to Knowledge movement, worked closely with the World Blind Union to design and lead a successful five-year global campaign for a UN Digital Copyright Treaty for the Blind, and developed and led ground-breaking European philanthropy initiatives on digital technology.
